A gold medal was awarded to our 2019 display entitled A Carnival of Exotic Tropical Blooms bringing to 15 the total number of gold medals awarded to the Grenada display.
According to team leader Catherine John the display was inspired by our island’s annual celebrations , which are cornerstones of our culture. Seeing Grenada at carnival is to experience our islands at their very best as it’s a time when we celebrate everything that makes them special all year round. The design, which was highly acclaimed by the judges, featured a carnival float with masked revelers on board.”

GRENADA BUSES EN-ROUTE TO THE COUNTRY
Pure Grenada otherwise known as the Spice Island of the Caribbean is of a size that makes it possible to tour the island in one day and there are absolute splendours along the way.
In the late 1930’s, Bedford truck chassis, engines and wheels were imported to Grenada and some owners would construct a wooden body consisting of a driver’s cabin and a roof over the wooden frame with bench-like seats, turning them into buses. The sides were left open so that passengers could enjoy the cool breeze whilst travelling. These buses were used for transporting persons to and from their workplace, school and the market place. Some goods were also carried on the roof top.
These passengers enjoyed the beautiful scenery of hills and mountains, gardens with flourishing shrubs, various exotic ornamentals such as Heliconias, Anthuriums, Gingers and various species of brightly coloured orchids and many more varieties of flowers and shrubs all blossoming in their splendour, accompanied by the numerous palms, tropical ferns, and the sweet aroma of our highly fragrant spices.
These buses were painted in bright colours and given various names. A journey on such a bus was a delight.
We felt that re-creating a small interpretation of these idyllic journeys would be of great interest.

Theme. —— HISTORICAL BOTANICAL GARDENS OF PURE GRENADA.
SHORT HISTORY OF THE BOTANICAL GARDENS OF GRENADA
In mid 1886 on the advice of Dr. Daniel Morris of Kew Gardens, England, - St. George’s Grenada was chosen as the site of the establishment of a Botanical Station, as it was then called. It was to be a research tool to improve methods of agriculture through the introduction and cultivation of medicinal, ornamental and economically beneficial plants”. A year later. The Botanical Station , located in Tanteen, St. George’s was opened to the public. At its inception the Botanical Station housed a nursery to propagate many valuable plant species, for many years served as a field experimental and demonstration laboratory for numerous plants.
We felt re-creating a small floral interpretation of the gardens would be of historical interest.
